Follow the links to the following immigration websites. Answer the questions, take notes, and paste pictures onto a Google Document.

Step One: Ellis Island
1. Under the Ellis Island Tab on the top, click on Immigration Timeline
1. What country had sent the most immigrants between 1790 and 1820?
2. Who was not counted in the country’s population during this time period?
3. Between 1820-1880, why did many Irish immigrants come to America?
4. Where were immigrants coming between 1880-1930?
5. What was the Chinese Exclusion Act?
6. Between 1965 and 2000, what country did most immigrants come from?
2. Under the Ellis Island Tab, click on Ellis Timeline
1. Read through the timeline – How did Ellis Island get its name?
2. When did Ellis Island Immigration Center open and who was the very first immigrant?
3. What was Ellis Island’s peak year for immigration?
4. During 1918-1919, what was Ellis Island used for?
3. Under the Ellis Island Tab, click on Ellis Island Photo Album
1. Check out the pictures of Ellis Island Then and Now
2. How are the immigrants clothes different than clothes we wear today?
3. Copy and paste three pictures that interest you onto your Google Doc.

1. If you know the last name of any of your grandparents or even your
great-grandparents – try doing a search of their last name. If not, try your last name.
List up to four matches and where they came from. You have to register as a user to
search further or to view the ship’s paperwork which you can do at home if you would like!
Step Two: Ellis Island Tour
1. Take this virtual tour of Ellis Island through the eyes of an immigrant. List the stops of the tour and describe what happens at each stop so that an immigrant could read your descriptions and be prepared for a journey through Ellis Island.
Step Three: Angel Island Poetry
Many Chinese immigrants were detained or held for months at an immigration on the West coast of the United States: Angel Island. Because of the Chinese Exclusion Act, many Chinese immigrants had a very hard time entering the United States.
1. Why do you think many Chinese immigrants wrote poetry on the walls while being detained at Angel Island?
2. Pretend you are an immigrant detained for several weeks on Angel Island. Write a poem that you might have brushed or carved on the wall. Express your feelings about leaving your homeland, being detained on the island or your dreams for a new life.
3. Did you learn anything new or surprising through visiting this site? Explain.
